FLORENCE, AL – Hispanic Heritage Month at the University of North Alabama is set to get underway Sept. 20, from 1-3 p.m. in front of Wesleyan Hall. “Latinos Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America” is the theme for this year’s event, which is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages.
“There are an estimated 60 million Hispanic-identifying people in this country and 40 million who are Spanish-speaking,” said Dr. Claudia Vance, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and among the organizers. “This event is a great way to remember diverse traditions and celebrate Hispanic art, culture, and literature.”
Along with an opportunity to learn more about Hispanic culture and diversity, the first 50 attendees will receive a free Department of Foreign Languages t-shirt, and piñatas will be smashed beginning at 1:30 p.m. LaHacienda Mexican Restaurant will be catering, and there will be games, along with salsa music and dancing.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will move inside Wesleyan Hall. Future celebrations of global cultures will include German Fest in October and French Week in November.
