FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of the North Alabama Opera/Musical Theatre from the Department of Music and Theatre was recently invited to perform Nov. 9 at 1:15 p.m. at Florence High School and Nov. 10 at 12:55 p.m. at Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham. Directed by music conductor Dr. Terrance Brown, the ensemble closed its production of "Songs for a New World" Oct. 21. After its production of "Songs for a New World," the ensemble was asked by local high school music directors to perform at the area high schools. The ensemble, which began last year with approximately seven members, has grown to 20 members, which Brown views as a significant accomplishment in a short time. "It's good to take students out and represent UNA," he said. "We've seen such growth in a small amount of time and (the students) continue to perform really well." The Opera/Musical Theatre is a student ensemble consisting of both music and non-music majors. The group performs between two and three productions each year, which are taken from musical theatre and operatic genres. The ensemble's next production will be Hansel and Gretel, an opera written by 19th century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, April 20-21 at 7:30 p.m. Students from Shoals Kids Choir in Florence will assist in the production.
