East Meets West: Una To Host Scholarship Dinner For Business Students Traveling To China

By Lucy Berry FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of North Alabama College of Business will host a Study Abroad: China Scholarship Dinner to help fund scholarships for 10-12 selected UNA students who will travel to China next summer. The fundraiser, which is set to take place Nov. 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., will allow individuals and local businesses to donate to the scholarships by purchasing single tickets or corporate tables. Proceeds from ticket sales will cover the travel costs of chosenstudents who will attend Tianjin Foreign Studies University in Tianjin, China, in June 2011. "We are eager for the business community to support our efforts of preparing UNA students for world commerce by donating to the scholarships or sponsoring a table," said Dr. Kerry Gatlin, dean of the UNA College of Business. The 10-12 business students will travel to Tianjin, China, for four weeks in June 2011, where they will study international business programs and cultural influences on business in the region. A UNA faculty member will also teach a course in international businessat the university. The business students and faculty member, who have not yet been selected for the study abroad trip, will have the opportunity to learn about business in China and take weekend trips to tourist locations. "The trip will enable students to go to China and learn about business, as well as give them the chance to understand the language, culture and traditions of China so they will be capable of possibly working there in the future," said Dr. Robert Armstrong,marketing professor and chair of the Study Abroad Committee. The barbecue dinner and fundraiser will include short speeches from local business leaders, displays of Chinese art, music and culture, and door prizes, including two $1,000 UNA scholarships, gift cards and other items. Tickets are $25 for individuals and $500 for corporate tables, which include eight tickets plus recognition as a sponsor.
