FLORENCE, Ala. - University of North Alabama head football coach Terry Bowden will speak at the university's 19th annual Fall Academic Convocation at 11 a.m. Sept. 16 in Norton Auditorium. The event, jointly sponsored by UNA and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, is for freshmen and new transfer students.
Prior to joining the UNA community in January, Bowden had earned national acclaim as a coach as well as a motivational speaker and a college football television and radio analyst. His credentials in coaching include a 15-year record of 111-53-2, an impressive winning percentage of 68 and virtually every national coach of the year award. He has served as head football coach for Auburn University, Samford University and Salem College. At Auburn, Bowden won 73 percent of his games and posted the best opening five-year run of any head football coach in school history. At Samford, he went 9-1 his first year with a team that had won only six games in the three years prior to his arrival. Four years later, the team posted a 12-2 record and made the Division I-AA semifinals. Salem had posted a 0-9-1 record the year before Bowden's arrival, but with Bowden at the helm, the team won the WVIA Conference Championship in Bowden's second season. It was the first of two straight championships for Bowden and Salem. Bowden is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he lettered two years as a running back (1977-78), held a 3.65 GPA in accounting - the highest GPA on the team - and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He did post-graduate work at Oxford University in England and earned a juris doctorate from the Florida State University School of Law in 1982 while serving as a graduate assistant coach for FSU.About The University of North Alabama
