Tennessee Valley Historical Society Awards College Scholarships

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Tennessee Valley Historical Society (TVHS), along with the Department of History and Political Science at the University of North Alabama, hosted the 29th annual TVHS Scholarship Competition for area high school juniors and seniors at the GUC on UNA's campus March 8. More than 140 students from area schools competed in the event. Scholarships are awarded based on a written exam that the students complete upon arrival to the competition, according to Chris Maynard, chair of the Department of History and Political Science. The following are 2013 scholarship winners: Raleigh Killen - Rogers High School - $750 Zeb Williams - Lexington High School - $500 Allison Rieff - Florence High School - $250 During the course of the day, students also had a chance to tour UNA's campus and compete in a scholars-bowl style competition known as "The Big Brain." Ryan Truitt of Lexington High School was presented with the individual award, and Lexington High School was presented with the team award.
